John Calipari Finally Jump’s Ship; Accepts Head Coaching Job At Arkansas

Long time head coach at the University of Kentucky, John Calipari, has decided to move on from the University and accept another coaching job in the SEC.

I personally think this is a good opportunity for Cal to restart. The past four season’s Cal has made it out of the first round only one time, and in 2020-21 the Wildcats went 9-16 and didn’t even make the tournament. With this program change, it’s interesting to see how this will turn out.

At the end of the day, Cal is one of the best coaches to ever do it at the college level. He’s had ton’s of success even before Kentucky with UMass and Memphis. Obviously he is going to get some great recruits, that’s just what he does. It will be interesting to see the approach he will take with that however.

Before he left Kentucky he had six commits, one five star and five four stars. Four out of the six of these recruits have already signed to the University, but it’s interesting to see if he will take them with him like he did when he left Memphis in 2009 with the likes of John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, as well as many others. Kentucky will likely release the players from their NLI if asked. It will also be just as easy for him to scoop up some recruits with that Jerry Jones booster money that he continuously supplies the University’s athletic programs with.

Calipari is in a good spot. Even with Arkansas coming off a down year, especially in conference play, I don’t think that affects his job next year. He’s used to winning, and Arkansas has had some pretty solid teams in recent years. He’ll find a way to make something happen and hopefully turn the page, because I’m rooting for him.
